Soul do Brasil

Colonial Architecture Tour

A route through the birth of Brazilian architecture

The preserved collection of Portuguese colonial architecture in Brazil has historical relevance recognized throughout the world. The Brazilian colonial baroque found in destinations like Minas Gerais and Bahia is classified by critics and researchers as a more expressive production, even, than that found in Portugal. The origin of this colonial architecture goes back to the adaptation of Portuguese construction techniques adapted to the materials available on Brazilian soil after the arrival of Europeans.Built using the rammed earth technique (derived from the adobe technique, typical of the Iberian peninsula) and hand rammed earth (known as pau-a-pique), colonial buildings can be visited and enjoyed today.
